The 1967 Shelby GT500 Super Snake Sold!
The previous record stood at $1.3 million, set by the same very car when it was sold back in 2013. This one-of-a-kind 1967 Shelby GT500 Super Snake went back up for auction again in January 2019 in Florida, US. Experts predicted this super rare Mustang could fetch around $1 million mark as muscle car enthusiasts from across the world gathered to slug it out.
The 1967 Shelby GT500 Super Snake smashed the record for the world’s most expensive Mustang after it went for a whopping $2.2 million. The Super Snake is a concept car that derives from the regular 1967 GT500 Mustang, upgraded with a Shelby ‘427’ engine and fitted with the same “bundle of snakes” exhaust system used on the champion GT40 power figure, leaving this Mustang with an astonishing 600bhp. With this huge amount of power its top speed is 170mph.
What makes this particular model so unique was its original purpose: promoting the new “Thunderbolt” tyres. To do that in style, the car had to be able to outperform anything else while holding up on these tyres at huge speeds (circa 142 mph). Subsequent tests to this effect were a complete success.1 The original plan was to build and sell 50 ‘Super Snakes’, but the concept was never rolled due to the excessive building price. The cost of the Super Snake on the market each would have been twice the price of a regular GT500.
